Paper Substitute: "Transparent Paper" => humidity resistant
Featured AnsweredHi guys,
searching for more material that is humidity resistant and more stable than paper, I found "Transparent Paper" (not sure about the correct english translation). Also in germany, Transparent Paper" is ambiguous - I do not mean the very sloppy and ultra-light paper you often use to copy underlying images or to glue tiny windows on lanterns or something. The paper I mean is strong and is used to build stars, like these: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bascetta-Stern
In any case, I bought these:
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07P7X192K
With a weight of 130g/cm², an A4 sized pice of paper (around 0,06cm²) weighs less than 8g. Plus the 11g for the Powerup Module, you still have a very light plane.
I folded a plane and to make it even more stable, I folded a small edge on the rear to have double-thick edge:
With motor:
Flies very good - sorry, I haven't recorded a video.
In any case, the paper ist cheap and just great!
Have fun!

Thanks for the recommendation, I will try to buy this type of paper. Today there was no wind, but the grass remained humid. My office paper plane lost its stiffness and while cornering just a little bit to steep, the plane lost all lift and crashed. With the same settings I had awesome flights in the days before.
A bit of a bummer, because days without any wind are very seldom.

Yes, right, waxed paper it is.
I built an Invader with it that flies very nicely - see here: https://youtu.be/b5kRscG-cCA
After that I build another version and enhanced the Bernoulli effect (thicker wing form at the front) using small "spacers":
and then put 2 of these inside the front folds of the wings:
That guy is now flying like a charm. It needs only 20%-30% thrust. The only problem is hard turns: Too steep turning angles can lead to fast dives (and crashes).
What are your favorite models?

Interesting to watch. The plane flies a bit wobbly, due to the wind? You might be able to stabilize it by adapting the parameters?
Although you mention wind, I don't see it having a hard time flying against the wind. I usually find it quite tough to fly in those conditions, because the plane flies slow the one way, but almost falls to the ground after turning since the relative air speed is then (too) low.
I have some issues with my plane, but that seems to be sorted soon with the helpdesk. Can't wait to be back -
This kite paper is very cheap 0,70 Euro for 70x100cm = 9x A4. On a Dutch kite-site it states that it is 42grams paper. It also mentions the downside that it is not very water resistant and easily rips due to moisture. Huh?
The mentioned Amazon paper is 130grams paper, must be something different then.I also see wax paper as a product to wrap your lunch in. The paper comes in 7 different colors. Nothing mentioned about paper weight.
Altogether it is tough to know what to buy. I tried 2 different types of plastified wrapping paper. this didn't work, due to curling of the paper, not very well folding and the bottom side of the material being plane paper again.

The waterproof paper templates that come with Powerup are made from Tyvek paper. Which is a Dupont type of plastic paper used for envelopes etc. I bought some A4 sheets off Amazon and it worked perfectly. I bought 105gsm which seems about right but it is available in different weights.
